Diamond Fluoresence

Fluorescence makes some diamonds appear to change color when they are exposed to the ultraviolet light that surrounds us every day in natural and artificial light. It isn't always a negative characteristic, but you need to be aware of its effects.

Handbag Quiz: Who's Holding that Clutch?

Saturday September 6, 2008
I love to see closeups pics of celebrities and their bracelets. They're a good preview of what's to come, because celebs are nearly always on the cutting edge of trends. You can bet that a high percentage of the styles that stars are wearing will show up on jewelry display racks either next season or a couple of seasons from now. It's the same with handbags -- designers take every opportunity to slip them on celebrity arms, especially for red carpet events, where photographers zoom-in on decorated wrists and hands. Can you guess who's carrying the clutch in this photo? Yes, then take the quiz. No, then take the quiz anyway for a close look at twenty female celebrities and their drop-dead clutches and wrist candy.

Python (Mostly) on Hold for 90210

Thursday September 4, 2008
This season's trendy python products can't be shipped to a California address -- you'll need to travel outside the state to buy your python accessories or have them sent to a friend in another state (someone you trust not to fall in love with them). Read the fine print though, because a few stores seem to be shipping python into California even though the law says no. And you might want to plan ahead, because as of January 1, 2010 crocodile and alligator leathers won't be allowed in, either.

Python isn't truly a trend, since it's been a popular leather for a very long time, but we are seeing more of it lately, and in a vast number of products and styles. This python circle necklace is from Rock Paper Scissors. The 14K gold plated circle is embossed with python leather and falls 22" below your neck. It's available in brown/black or black/white. (Buy Direct) The company offers a matching bangle -- also in either color combo. (Buy Direct)

This inky blue Antoinette Lee clutch measures 15" long and about 6.5" tall -- just right for a night out. The clutch is lined in black, with a zippered pocket inside and three magnetic closures to keep it tightly shut. (Buy Direct)

Jewelry Find: Mystic Necklace

Tuesday September 2, 2008
Wearing multiple necklaces remains a popular trend this summer. You can mix and match them yourself or choose a necklace like this, with 4-strands made from a combination of beads and faux suede. Its 2.25" gold-tone pendant dangles front and center and a decorative lobster claw clasp keeps the necklace securely in place. An 18" (princess) length lets the necklace rest just below your collarbone. (Buy Direct)

Jewelry on the Campaign Trail

Saturday August 30, 2008
The jewelry on candidates (and candidate wives) in this year's Presidential campaign isn't all about the pearls and ultra conservative styles we've seen in the past. Don't get me wrong -- there are pearls -- but mostly big and bold faux pearls in a range of colors. Women seem to be breaking away from the safe and standard fare to give us a glimpse of their own style.
